Ok now, altogether: "AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!"
How do you know when she's the one? When she thinks it's a totally cool idea to have the bride & groom statues on the top of your wedding cake made out of Lego! Nancy and I were married on May 1st, 2002 at San Francisco City Hall. As our nuptials and reception grew near, we were deeply entrenched in planning out all the little details. I wondered what my lovely bride-to-be's reaction might be when I suggested ABS as the topping to our wedding cake, but she loved the idea. We were planning to have two receptions because most of her family is in New Jersey while mine resides in California, so we decided to have two different toppers for each cake.
I designed the one for the California reception, which she approved immediately, and we collaborated on the one for the reception in New Jersey. The color scheme for the California reception was red, black, and gold, to reflect the invitations we'd sent. I built the topper very quickly, and was really glad that I'd bought the rereleased Guarded Inn because the wine goblet and grapes flag was the perfect rooftop adornment. For the New Jersey reception, Nancy wanted a more traditional all-white design, and with a little help from Belville, we made it happen!
Both events went beautifully and the unique toppers to our cakes delighted everybody. I was especially happy with them since most wedding cake toppers are really generic. There's not much of a range to chose from in terms of design so I thought it would be great if we had our own. It was just one more way for us to put a unique stamp on our special day and to make it even more personal. I was also very lucky in both cases that I was able to match very closely both dresses that Nancy wore. With a little help from an X-acto knife, Harry Potter's non-lightning bolt-scarred head stood in for mine.
